Graduating in the middle of an unfolding global drama is no mean feat. The world was locked up, physically and mentally, and then suddenly you found yourself in it with your own process, with your own questions and desires. Never before have you been so self-reliant and you had to find a way to answer your own questions. It is therefore a great achievement that the final exam class of 2020 has succeeded very well in this. While this process of self-sufficiency usually only starts after the final exam, this group was already dependent on it before the exams. As strange as it may sound, this is also proof that they were ready before they should have been.
More importantly, the work is not reactive to the situation itself: the autonomy of the maker has embedded itself in the work and this will remain of great value long after the special circumstances have disappeared. The knowledge, skills and insights in the work show a relevance that transcends today’s illusions. This is a gift of the artists and designers who have carefully built it, who have used their passions and urgencies to carve out a place for themselves in the domain, just at a time when ‘the world’ was looking the other way. We are very proud of this and confident that we will see (much) more of them.
After some delay, the work of the 2020 graduates is now proudly presented to you.
